Our Vision for the Future
The See Forever Foundation began with a small program in a pizza shop and now supports four Maya Angelou Schools across the District of Columbia. We are launching the Campaign for our Future so that we can continue to offer young people the highest-quality education—and a second chance—for years to come.
Over the next year, we will be embarking on a $21 million renovation to transform our Evans Campus into the Maya Angelou Learning Center. This state-of-the-art facility, located in Ward 7, will house our middle and high school programs as well as our new Young Adult Learning Center.
By consolidating our charter schools into one facility, we will realize nearly $2 million in annual operational savings. As a result, we will be able to redirect our resources from operating expenses to the enhancement of critical programming for our students: small classes, extended day programs, onsite counseling and mental health services, and college and postsecondary supports for our alumni.
To support the renovation of the Evans Campus, we are launching a $5 million capital campaign. The funds raised in this campaign are a key component of our overall financing plan, which includes approximately $9 million in long-term debt, $2 million in proceeds from the sale of the OddFellows Building (the home of our Shaw Campus), and $5 million in New Market Tax Credits.
We have already made progress towards our goal. See Forever was recently awarded a $1 million grant from the Office of the State Superintendent of Education through the City Build grant program. This grant recognizes See Forever’s commitment to the academic success of at-risk youth and the District’s commitment to our sustainability. In addition, See Forever and Maya Angelou board members and other individual donors have committed just under $500,000 to the campaign. So we are off to a great start.
